Abstract

Indonesia, with the world's largest Muslim population, has great potential to lead a sustainable global halal food ecosystem. This article examines the issues, challenges and opportunities of developing a halal food ecosystem to support the Indonesian economy. The growth of the global halal market, estimated at USD2.3 trillion per year, offers opportunities for export expansion, especially halal meat. However, challenges such as the complexity of halal certification, low public literacy, and limited infrastructure hinder the realization of this potential. By integrating technologies such as blockchain and the Internet of Everything, Indonesia can improve the efficiency and transparency of the halal supply chain. Multi-stakeholder collaboration between the government, businesses, educational institutions, and religious leaders is key to strengthening this ecosystem. A holistic approach that combines technological innovation, inclusive policies, and community empowerment supports the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly inclusive economic growth and sustainable consumption. This article offers strategies to overcome challenges and capitalize on opportunities to position Indonesia as a global halal innovation.
